Amalfi
Amalfi is the top location of the Amalfi Coast. The coastline, about 40km long, starts from Vietri sul Mare and ends in Positano, in the province of Salerno, in Campania the region (about 200Km south of Rome).
It is an area well known throughout the world, first of all for the extraordinary beauty of his land, with towering mountains – up to 1444mt high – overlooking the sea. The Amalfi Coast creates an unique landscape and has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Many monuments have been left behind along the coast by the populations that lived here over the centuries. In fact there are roman villas, medieval buildings and churches everywhere that all tell the glorious story of this land. It was was once the oldest marine republic in Italy where the compass was invented along with the first code for navigation. Such was the importance of this ancient marine republic that its symbol was integrated into the national flag (an 8 pointed cross). Today the area is divided into 13 small villages, (Amalfi being the central one), which have all preserved their medieval architecture and traditions and customs of the past.
The 13 villages, in the following order, are: Vietri sul mare, Cetara, Maiori, Tramonti, Minori, Ravello, Atrani, Scala, Amalfi, Conca dei Marini, Furore, Praiano and Positano.
A holiday in Amalfi is therefore a journey of discovery of these locations, each one offering something different.
We would advise you to make this journey whilst staying in one of these villages along the coast as this is the only way to get a real feel for the way of life here and its undisputed qualities in other areas such as climate and food.

Red Itinerary
The red itinerary allows you to visit the most ancient and auhtentic part of the city, its alleys. Amalfi was in fact built along the banks of the river Canneto, that still flows under the main street of the city, as it was covered at the end of 1800’s. Authentic Amalfi can only truly be visited by entering the little side streets, a real maze, in which it is quite easy to lose your way. It is a walk you can take very safely as our town has no problems in this respect.
Following the red itinerary, which lasts about 1 hour, you will visit: Via delle Repubbliche Marinare, the cercamic panel of Diodoro Cossa, the Piazza Municipio, the Supportico S. Andrea, the Chapel of the Little S. Anna, Largo Filippo Augustariccio, via dei Prefetturi, the Chapel of S. Anna, the Church of S. Maria Maggiore, the Church of Addolorata, Salita Bonelli, via S. Simone, salita A. Tirabassi, the Church of S. Lucia, Supportico Rua, Piazza Spirito Santo, the ruins of S. Spirito Church, Palazzo Castriota, via F. M. Pansa, via Ercolano Marini, the Church of Carmine, vico dei Pastai, via Mastalo Duca, Salita Ruggiero II, the Church of S. Giuseppe and Piazza dei Dogi.
Yellow Itinerary
The Yellow itinerary allows you to visit the two most important monuments of Amalfi (the Duomo of Saint Andrew and the Arsenale della Repubblica) and to walk on the panoramic promenade on the sea front.
The itinerary takes 2 hours and you will visit: Piazza Duomo, il Duomo di Sant’Andrea Apostolo, la Porta della Marina, il Pannello di Renato Rossi, gli Antichi Arsenali della Repubblica, il Largo Cesareo Console, il Vicolo Masaniello, la Salita S. Nicola dei Greci, la Via Annunziatella, la Chiesa di S. Biagio, l’Albergo Cappuccini, il Chiostro di S. Pietro della Canonica, la Passeggiata Longfellow, la Salita S. Caterina ed il Lungomare dei Cavalieri.
Other suggestions
We suggest you to combine the visit of Amalfi with the walk of Valle delle Ferriere, spending the morning walking through the valley and the afternoon visiting the town.
From April to October the best day to do this itinerary is Wednesday for English speakers and Saturdays for Italian speakers. In these days there is in fact the guided tour of the town “Racconti del territorio” when a local expert will show you the monuments and tell you the stories of the town.
